![]() ![]() The early parts of the campaigns were okay, just your typical CoD hitscan shooter affairs but then you get two whole missions dedicated to the AC-130 and everything starts to get really questionable, the AC-130's gameplay is far too one note to even have 2 whole levels dedicated and as a result I feel an intense burnout from all the on rails shooting from a bird's eye view I was doing. Either way, the boss fights are really bad.ĥ0% PlayStation 5I really wanted to enjoy this campaign I really did, but it was so awkwardly paced, while also having terrible AI on top of having inconsistent checkpoints that makes Halo jealous to the point where it sapped up much of the potential enjoyment I could be having. I have a feeling this was done as a another element of the multiplayer which is Raids but I could be wrong here. Also, this is the first Call of Duty to incorporate boss encounters and I hope it's the last because they're beyond poor and really give you no reason to care. The first half of the game felt incredibly good and well paced but once the "plot twist" happens, the gameplay because a very forced introduction into elements of Warzone and a weird unnecessary crafting system which makes the campaign begin to feel tedious. The only character that's really notable is Alejandro Vargas and Phillip Graves. It feels like The Expendables movie in video game form. ![]() The story plays it safe and really gives you no reason to really care about any of the characters. I thought it was overall a huge step back from MW 2019 which was a huge step back from the original MW series. Walker, on the other hand, gets innocents killed because acting out a power fantasy is more important to him than his actual orders.60% PCTotal hours: 7 Gameplay: 12/20 Story: 4/10 Audio: 8/10 Graphics: 10/10 Overall: 34/50 or 68% Comments: The story overall was just fine. Spec Ops, by contrast, takes such a weapon and exposes players to the reality of just how horrifying it can be, and in doing so, underlines why it's so important for militaries to have rules of engagement. Video games often trivialize the tools at an advanced army's disposal, turning airstrikes or nuclear bombs into power-ups or multiplayer rewards. The scene remains shocking because it exposes how horrific modern warfare can be. This leads to the infamous white phosphorus scene, where both player and avatar unwittingly incinerate a camp full of civilians. Whereas many war shooters use cinematics and set-piece spectacles to rob audiences of agency, Spec Ops requires the player's participation. ![]() Instead, players must typically carry out his actions to proceed, whether that means leading charges, gunning down enemies or even exterminating them with incendiary weapons. In keeping with the themes of choice and consequence, Walker is rarely controlled by cutscenes. This desire to play the hero is foundational to the tragedy of the story and nowhere is it better reflected than in the journey of its protagonist Captain Walker. The American military enters Dubai with a sincere desire to help and, while their presence ultimately makes things worse, it's abundantly clear that their intentions were noble. This more personal focus allows the game to delve deeper into the psychology of its characters, exploring the consequences of the choices made by soldiers in stressful situations. Spec Ops avoids this minefield by treating its soldiers as individuals who live and die by their own choices, not nationalistic hammers with which some poorly-characterized villains of the week are bludgeoned. Modern military shooters are often criticized, especially by players outside of the US, because they generally depict the nation's armies as heroic paragons that can do no wrong, even when they have their enemies utterly outnumbered. While the game isn't explicitly about war, its smaller scale makes it feel like a more genuine reflection of it. ![]()
