Noel 2 is an exciting collection of Advent, Christmas and Epiphany music for mixed voice choirs, from the easy to learn to the more challenging and unconventional. Hodie has a soothing quality, like much chant music, and will appeal to most listeners interested in the genre.David Hill (Editor) : Noel 2 - Carols and Anthems for Advent, Christmas and Epiphany It is undoubtedly an earlier version of that Pater Noster theme. It will sound vaguely familiar to those who remember the Roman Catholic mass from the pre-Vatican II era since its main theme's opening notes are much the same as those occurring in the mass' Pater Noster (Our Father). While it is sung at Christmas, Hodie does not brim with the vivacity and joy of most music associated with that holiday. But for all the seeming limitation of its monophonic singing, chant has a subtle beauty and appeal, as this antiphon amply demonstrates. The early church resisted polyphonic and more varied and colorful styles of music, fearing they might detract from the mass and other forms of worship. Hodie Christus natus Est (Today Christ Is Born) is a short antiphon lasting only about a minute, and like all Gregorian chant, is monophonic and has no meter. The "mode 1" in the headnote pertains to the church mode it is written in, in this case, the Dorian mode. This antiphon was intended for the Christmas season in the Roman Catholic Church. ![]()
